THÉOLOGIE ET LUMIÈRES, JONATHAN EDWARDS PAR ROY CARPENTER

2016-01-06

===========

Paradoxically ignored by the public, Jonathan Edwards created solid theological foundations that now enliven a large part of many movements called "evangelical." In balance between the intellectual heritage of the Enlightenment and a revivalist religious practice, he founded a foundation for a modern theology, which denounces selfishness and individual quest for comfort and wealth.

Not hesitating to question authority, even when it is favorable, Edwards favors justice and the experience of the people, blacks, women, Indians, children.

As his theology, the heritance of Edwards is in tension; considered today as the greatest American theologian, without doubt the most important of the Western world in the eighteenth century: in elite universities, admiring the Enlightment and the philosopher, while the preacher of hell still live in the spirit of populist orators of modern evangelical churches.
